RESUMO

In addition to being widely distributed throughout the New World, Aedes scapularis is recognized as an important vector of severa I virus diseases. Its immature stages develop in natural ground pool breeding sites which are formed by rain falI. This study has been done at The Santa Genebra Farm, Campinas - SP, where several Aedes scapularis breeding sites were found. The main objective was to determine the mortality factors which act over Aedes scapularis immature stages and their consequences to population fluctuation and regulation processes. The results indicated that: 1. The analysis of regional lO-day water balance period reflects precisely the influence of rain water amount and distribution on Aedes scapularis efective formation of breeding aites; 2. IndividuaIs of Aedes scapularis present rapid development period for the immature stages and high potencial of population growth; 3. Drying up of breeding sites was considered the most important key factor of mortality; 4. Although acting density independently, predation ia on important mortality factor of Aedes acapularis immature stages; 5. There ia no density dependent regulation for Aedea scapularis immature stages; 6. Natality, expressed as individuaIs on the first larval atage, may be a good predictor for future Aedes scapularis adult population size
