RESUMO

The orb-weaver spider Micrathena nigrichelis was studied on forest borders at Serra do Japi, Jundiaí, state of São Paulo, between 1989 and 1990. The prey capture process was examined and selectivity was investigated at three levels: the first one was the interception by the web, whereas the others regarded the spider s behavior of attack and capture. Only natural intercepted p rey directly observed on the webs were recorded. It was observed that the spider s weight affects web s characters, but not its function. The spider s responses to intercepted prey were investigated taking into account the abundance of different sized prey and its variability. The spider s handling behavior varies with the prey size and is more variable among the midle sized prey (>2-4 mm). The attacked and captured prey did not differ in relation to the size distribution of the intercepted prey. Despite its generalist behavior on attacking, the spider showed preference for small prey (>0-2 mm) at the capture leveI. The possibility of testing the risk sensitive theory in the process of prey selection was also discussed.
