RESUMO

Ecological aspects of the vegetation that grows in the rock outcrops from the seashore of southeastern Brazil are almost unknown. Due to the absence or the shalowness of the soil, so typical of this habitat, the vegetation is subjected to a strong water defieit during the interval between showers. The floristic composition. the structure of these communities and the, physiologieal adaptations of the plants are strongly influenced by this characteristic. Eleven areas were selected for the present study. In each area the species and the form of their distribution were recorded. A special attention was dedicated to the organizational characteristics of the vegetation found in "soil islands" over the rocks. Adaptive characteristics examined in the vegetation were the presence of dessication tolerance, crassulacean acid metabolism and ?C IND. 4? type of photosynthesis. The rock outcrops vegetation examined showed a typical floristic composition ... Note: The complete abstract is available with the full electronic digital thesis or dissertations
