RESUMO

Hermodice carunculata is considered an important predator of Cnidarians; feeding on Zoanthids, anemones, gorgonians, hydrocorals and stone corals (Scleractineans). Predation is an important agent on structuring of communities, increasing or a lowering the diversity. The goals of this work were to identify the diet of H. carunculata in coral reefs of Carijoa riisei on Porto de Galinhas beach (Pernambuco); describe the feeding behavior and strategies of predation of H. carunculata. Especimens of H. carunculata were collected in coral reefs of Porto de Galinhas beach, to observation of feeding strategies. We evaluate 1442 hours/individual of observation in five experiments. In the predation experiments held with C. riisei, two strategies was observed and named as break and rasping, the latter being more common. The Polichaeta preferred Protopalythoa variabilis and Millepora alcicornis; and preferred Bunodosoma cangicum instead the two species above mentioned. In C. riisei reefs, H. carunculata preferred this octocorallian as feed item and showed a preference for dead animals, when they are disposable. H. carunculata is an opportunist predator that feeds on the more accessible preys, using variable ingestion strategies, which varies with the physical structure of the prey or feed item
