RESUMO

This research shows the reisadoa traditional festival of Medieval Portuguese originin Piatãs Chapada Diamantina as a manifestation of rural agriculturalist culture. Specifically, I ask in what ways being a rural agriculturalist is what defines the reisado from Piatã or Abaíra as a cultural manifestation, continuing from reconfigurations and hybridizations of traditional knowledge. Far from stereotypes or from depreciative viewpoints taken by many that see the rural agriculturalist as a destitute individual with only erudite knowledge, I use the category rural agriculturalist to refer to the reisado from Piatã and Abaíra. In this way, I report on a group of rural practices and representations that are expressed in ternos de Reis. I start by attempting to understand the popular traditional game from a social, historical, and cultural perspective, which considers the multiethnic contributions made through the process of the colonization of Chapada Diamantina. This research is thus intended to contribute new elements to understanding cultural practices in Chapada Diamantina through a discussion of the characterization of those cultural manifestations with the purpose of identifying singularities of this both religious and playful practice. This dissertation also contributes to understanding rural dynamics in micro regions.
