RESUMO

INTRODUCTION: Many studies have investigated the relationship between periodontal disease (PD) and ischemic cardiovascular disease (ICVD), but their results are mixed. OBJECTIVE: In view of this heterogeneity, we carried out a meta-analysis to determine the association between exposure to PD and ischemic CDH. MATERIAL AND METHODS: Studies published case-control between 1999 and 2009 were obtained from the search site PUBMED / MEDLINE, Lilacs e Google. The articles included report results of observational case-control studies on the association between PD and DCVI, where the PD should have been diagnosed by clinical parameters that included probing depth (PD) and clinical attachment level (NIC) and ICVD was represented by Coronary Artery Disease (CAD), Myocardial Infarction (IAM) with or without angina pectoris, or Acute Coronary Syndrome (ACS). The quality of the articles was assessed using criteria recommended in "The Strengthening the Reporting of Observational Studies in Epidemiology-STROBE. In addition, compliance with the guidelines of the guide to meta-analysis for observational studies-MOOSE. RESULTS: Of the 23 studies, case-control eligible, 16 had their results combined using the methodology of meta-analysis. The overall odds ratio was approximately 2.52 (95% CI [2109 3009], p <0.001), indicating that individuals with PD have an increased chance of developing ischemic CDH as compared to those without PD. CONCLUSION: Observational case-control suggest that individuals with PD are more likely to develop ICVD, however, further studies are needed for more definitive conclusions.
