RESUMO

This study investigated places and ways of seeing in a search for answers to questions that emerged in the chronic ward of a psychiatric hospital. It was shaped through details and unforgettable accounts from professionals of three anti-institutional settings in public mental health services of the State of São Paulo that offer art workshops for those considered insane. The issue that motivated the study was related to institutional symptoms that persist, even in ?colored? environments. The process enabled the discovery of many languages that were able to express both art and insanity accompanying this study. The trail of writings and images followed the direction of recognition and deconstruction of ready-made concepts, attitudes and views, using a methodology built on interviews, observations, reflection and drawings. Instead of seeking a proposal with easy answers, this study shows how we direct our views, and how the way we see things depends on the place from which we speak and on the construction of vision. A vision able to see shadows and the sun coming from behind. A vision able to see life and make the text come alive with people that suffer in the strange world filled with institutions which are ill themselves
