RESUMO

The aim of the present work is to assess the extent to which the degree of specialization or diversification externalities may affect the innovative performance in a particular microregion. Additionally, the influence of other regional factors on the innovative output is examined, such as regional R&D capacity, schooling of local population and the innovative tradition of the microregion. The analysis is based on a database of 63 microregions of the state of São Paulo from 1996 to 2003 that was merged by micro-data mainly from Yearly Industrial Survey and Brazilian Patent Office. These data were analyzed by means of Exploratory Analysis of Spatial Data and panel data regression models with spatial dependence. Both techniques reveal the spatial and temporal evolution of the regional innovation system of the state of São Paulo. The main result shows that microregions innovative performance seems to be affected mainly by the specialization externalities rather than diversification externalities. Other results emphasize the positive influence played by the schooling of local population, the technological knwoledge spillovers, and the innovative tradition of the microregion on its innovative output
