RESUMO
The vegetation in the Cariri region of ParaÃba, Brazil, considered to be a priority area for caatinga conservation, has suffered alterations and significant losses of biodiversity, especially along stream bank environments. The family Rubiaceae is one of the most diverse families in the caatinga, nevertheless, the family remains taxonomically and floristically poorly in this biome. The objective of this study was to survey the Rubiaceae of the Cariri region of ParaÃba and to compare the species diversity and richness in different habitats within the region (typical caatinga, caatinga on rock outcrops, and stream bank vegetation) so as to better understand the composition of the vegetation and help determine strategies for its conservation and sustainable use. The field work was conduct from july/2007 to july/2008 and consisted of aleatory collections of Rubiaceae in various localities in the Cariri and systematic collections in six localities in the Western Cariri and three in the Eastern Cariri, each site representing each of the three habitats was selected. Fourteen genera comprising 21 species (including two that are probably new to science) were found and identified. The was no differences between the species occurring in the two microregions. The habitat with the highest species richness was the caatinga on rock outcrops. In the grouping analysis based on presence/absence, this habitat was distinct from the other habitats. No patterns were noted for areas of typical caatinga or stream bank vegetation
