The purpose of the present research was to verify which were the forms of treatment and how they occured in the dialogs taken out of three José de Alencars novels. Besides we could investigate if there were significant differences in the use of theses forms, considering the social roles of the characters, since in the constant interaction of the language some linguistic features are shown as able to define the relations existing among the various social roles, understood, according to Robinson (1977, p. 114) as the behavior expected from a person with a certain position in the social structure. For the present work, the society of the XIX century was defined a period literarily designed as Romanticism since it was in this romanticist epoch that occured the inicial point of a literary production, properly brasilian, both in the contents and in the form, providing therefore the study of the treatments considered in literary texts. Inserted in Romanticism, José de Alencars works stand out as a research source due to the writer being greatly involved in the diversity existent between the spoken languages, in Portugal and in Brazil. This study, based in the Conversation Analyse, in social Linguistics and in the Interactional Soacial Linguistics contained a corpus formed by three Alencars novels: Senhora, Lucíola e Diva, called behavior works, in which the language is used as na expressive element in the discription of the environment (cf. Preti, 1994, p. 75)
