RESUMO
Landscape mosaics composed by fragments of natural vegetation and artificial habitats are becoming widespread all around the world due mainly by agriculture. For this reason, wildlife inventories and conservation programs should take into account not only pristine habitats but also agroecosystems. This study is part of a multitaxa survey carried out at the same study site. Its main goals were to determine bird species richness and abundance in different elements of an agricultural landscape using Passa-Cinco river basin (between latitudes 22º05 and 22º30S, and longitudes 47º30 and 47º50W) as a model, as well as to test point counts efficiency as a method for bird surveys in anthropic habitats. In order to do so, we used multiple levels of information from field to landscape variables and multivariate statistical analises. We reported 224 species of birds for the river basin. Native forest fragments presented the largest species richness (164) and exotic pastures had the largest abundance of individuals. Native forest fragments presented a distinct pattern than the other landscape elements considering species composition and abundance in multidimensional scaling analysis. Distinct trophic categories had different patterns of distribution and abundance in relation to the different landscape elements. Well structured habitats such as native forest fragments are essential for the conservation of bird communities in agroecosystems. Point counts can be efficaciously used for bird surveys in agroecosystems. Considering human values of agriculture and biodiversity conservation, the present results stress that native forest fragments should be considered essential elements of agricultural landscapes and agroecosystems as a whole should merit conservation efforts. These results might be used to improve biodiversity conservation outside conservation units of the state of São Paulo, Brazil.
