RESUMO
From 27/10/1997 to 19/11/2000, as part of the REVIZEE1 Program, 27 exploratory fishing cruises were done along the external margin of the continental shelf and slope, off northeast Brazil, using bottom longline and traps as fishing gears. The relative abundance of the species caught was analyzed through the Catch per Unit of Effort (CPUE), as the number of specimens captured per hundred hooks, for the longline, and number of specimens captured, per trap, per set, for the bottom traps. Vertical profiles of temperature and salinity obtained during the first 2 longline cruises, indicated the presence of a mixed layer, with about 80m, while in the in the third and fourth cruises, the thermocline was very close to the surface, at about 20m of depth. The distribution and relative abundance of 8 teleosts and 2 elasmobranchs caught in the longline operations were studied. Species diversity tend to decline with depth. There was a bathymetric segregation among species, as follows: shallow waters (Lutjanusâ.); intermediate waters (Lopholatilusâ); and deep waters (Squalusâ). The vertical distribution of fish species was influenced by the thermocline, with some of them being present only below it. The 4 crustacean species studied (Chaceonâ), caught with bottom traps, showed a vertical distribution between 100m and 600m, exhibiting characteristics of euribathic and eurithermal species. Both fish and crustaceans were more abundant in depths over 100m. The genus Squalus and Mustelus, as well as Chaceon, Rochinia, Plesionika, and Heterocarpus, seem to be more adapted to greater depths than the majority of the teleosts. The presence of crustaceans and fish in depths greater than 100m suggest that they share a common habitat and are therefore influenced by common factors, such as temperature and depth
