RESUMO

In the past two decades, divorce and cohabiting unions increased significantly in Uruguay. These two phenomena have been the most revealing features of the emergence of a new conjugal agreement. This research work analyses the demographic dynamics of conjugal dissolutions and repartnerings, drawing on different statistical sources (cross sectional official microdata and retrospective surveys). Its main purpose is to contribute to a further understanding of the new conjugal instability -and the subsequent complexity of marital histories- in the context of recent Uruguayan family change. It also aims at providing some evidence of the singularity of the Second Demographic Transition in a strongly seculariseddeveloping country
