RESUMO
The main purpose of this study is to analyse the discursive construction of the LIBRAS Sign Language interpreters identity in the context of higher education in Brazil, the power relations in this practice and its social implications. The investigation of this emerging topic in contemporary society sheds light on such issues as access and equal opportunities, with the aim of examining the identity positions attributed to Sign Language interpreters or that they claim, in their interactions with social actors in this context, mainly teachers and deaf students. The theoretical-methodological approach framework adopted is Critical Discourse Analysis (Fairclough, trans. 2001 and 2003, Wodak and Meyer, eds. 2001, and Chouliaraki and Fairclough, 1999), which considers discourse as a moment of social practice articulated with the category of identity, which is established by difference (Woodward, 2000). The study results in the definition of coexistent discourses in the academic context, supported by representations that, both contribute to the constitution of the educational interpreters social identity and are, in term, inscribed in the interactions among interpreters, deaf students and teachers. A discourse that reproduces social exclusion practices is visible, as is another that promotes social transformation.
