RESUMO

In this dissertation, the reader will be introduced to the phenomenon consisting of three music groups from Aracaju and one group from Recife, Brasil, who are developing a musical hybridization based on local and regional elements on the one hand and transnational elements on the other; they are Sulanca, Naurêa, Maria Scombona e Chico Science e Nação Zumbi. The musicians and fans are constructing an own sense of locale, stressing the intricacies of the region where they live, with its musical traditions, the current verbal arts, the regional Portuguese, and the playful character of the different musical expressions. This work belongs to the already existing studies on urban popular music, which are steadily developing in the last decades, mostly dedicated to African, Caribbean and South-American contexts. One of its main objectives is to increase the knowledge on urban and rural musical culture from the states of Sergipe and Pernambuco, interpreting part of the musical richness of the country. The phenomenon of musical hybridization in Brazil will be systematically tackled in order to extend the knowledge about the way different kinds of messages are communicated through performance. The artistic way of transmitting messages by way of poetics, and by other verbal and non-verbal idioms, makes up an important element of the development and force of a musical current, and the way it is received by the public. Based on various ethnographic studies, on declarations and the use of audiovisual recordings, the performance and poetic force is here being explored. In the concluding observations some peculiarities of the performance and play aspects are disclosed and related to the way musical trends develop. In short, this work attempts to provide another vision on a specific cultural space, the mangue region of Aracaju and Recife, by focusing on different kinds of artistic expressions, and on the levels of discourse of the musicians, who are influenced by urban life, by regional cultural expressions and by non-brazilian, or transnational, musical currents.
