RESUMO

Human beings interact with the environment in such a way as to cause damage to the terrestrial ecosystems. Over the years, Man has interacted with the nature in order to extract the natural resources he needs for surviving, and has rejected the waste back in the environment. The intensity and the speed of the impacts caused by such activity varied according to the cultural stage of the history of civilization. The industrial revolution launched a new and fundamental period of human history # it represented the consecration of the ruled capitalist economy and of the logic off limitless growth of production and consumption. The human capacity of intervention in the natural domain grew enormously, and it has continued to grow since then. Yet, the Earth has no capacity to properly absorb the solid residues produced as a result of industrial activities. Therefore, human society undergoes an intense environmental crisis, and for such reason it needs to recreate their traditional economical, institutional and cultural standards in order to achieve environmental sustainability. An important step for the creation of such an environmentally sustainable society consists of the reformulation of its legal framework related to environmental protection, more specifically in matters related to the destination of industrial solid waste. In this piece of work, I intend to evaluate the environmental impacts caused by the inadequate destination of solid residues as well as to investigate the efficiency of the Brazilian system of legal responsibilities applied to companies to prevent and to reduce environmental degradation.
