RESUMO

The regular echinoid Echinometra lucunter is an edible species and common along the Brazilian coast, being an important indicator of the limit between intertidal and infralitoral zones and acting in the erosion of the reefs. The purpose of this work was to analyze the population dynamics of this species in a tide pool of Muro Alto beach in Pernambuco - Brazil from August, 2004 to August, 2005. A total of 2.635 urchins were collected during low spring tides in a 42 m2 sampled area. The average density was 62.74 ind.m-2, with highest density in October (112.17 ind.m-2) and the lowest one in April (20 ind.m-2). The population presented an aggregated distribution pattern. The Global average size of the larger test diameter was 26.35 mm, ranging from 17.58 to 35.58 mm; the height of the test ranged from 8.24 to 17.85 mm and its average value was 12.71 mm. The highest average gonadal index was 4.26% in October, 2004 while the lowest was 0.71% in March, 2005. Sex ratio was 1.12:1 with significant seasonal variation. Mature individuals were found from 20 mm test diameter. An annual period of recruitment was observed. The von Bertalanffy parameters were L∞= 115 mm, K= 0.280 year-1 and mortality of 0.60 year-1. The results of this work showed differences and similarities with E. lucunter from different places, as well as with other species of regular Echinoids, considering its growth parameters, mortality rate, recruitment pattern, density and distribution pattern, as well reproductive and gametogenic cycles
