RESUMO

During the fetal period there is relationship between sequential formation of nephrons and gestacional age. However, there are newborns with different weight but with similar gestacional age. The charts of renal size in newborns are usually related to gestacional age or to newborn weight. In the literature we did not find studies correlating the renal size with the body weight subdivided in small or adequate for the gestacional age. We prospectively studied 316 kidneys in 158 newborn without apparent urinary tract disease by ultrasound to determine the normal renal dimensions as correlated with gestacional age and body weight, which was subdivided in small (SGA-71 cases) and adequate for gestacional age (AGA ? 87 cases). The renal size showed a direct correlation with body weight, independently of gestacional age and of the classification in small or adequate for gestacional age, When the renal size was correlated to gestacional age of the newborn, the subdivision in adequate or small for gestacional became necessary, because there was significant difference between these two groups
