RESUMO

This research aims to understand the formation of this social movement as a collective subject among their complex relations with the State, which means, to what extent their participation in different contexts of institutionalized confrontation changed the meaning of freedom and autonomy influenced by the institutional experience; identify elements of the democratization of the base/ administration relationship, as opposed to the predominant culture in the society in which authoritarian hierarchical relationships prevail, and the patronage mechanisms, open and/or concealed, of cooptation that are constantly updated. Therefore, based on studies and research, this thesis is divided into four chapters, besides the final considerations. The first chapter focuses on the sources of conceptions of the MST. It was sought to identify the ideological matrix in which the MST are inspirited. This also recovers the process of discussing and redefining the nature of the State pari passu to the assertion of civil society. The second chapter is about the hard path of the MST in Sergipe in the search for autonomy. In this process it has been tried to understand their relationship with sectors of the church, the CUT and the PT as well as the traditional mechanisms of institutionalization of social movements in such field, used by both the Catholic Church and the State. The third chapter refers to the upward path of the MST in the search for affirmation of their identity, and seeks to identify their participation in the new channels of institutional mediation. The final chapter aims to contextualize the struggle of the landless in the complex framework of ideological polarization between the PT and the PFL and cooptation of social movements. And at last the Final Considerations which seek to establish the degree of correspondence between the hypothesis and the search results.
