RESUMO

The rapid changes that the world has experienced in recent decades have affected social and economic problems, together with the effects of globalization, the uncontrolled population growth, besides the occurrence of incorrigible environmental imbalances. The direction that the circumstances today are going requires from the human being more consciousness and understanding, and the adoption of solidarity and humanitarian values towards attitudes and actions based on sustainable principles in order to prevent the world and their various territories to get into collapse. Accordingly, this paper devoted to the study and ethnographic research in the village of Baixio, a little town of Esplanada, Bahia, with the objective of understanding the processes of local development and point to the need of introducing sustainable practices for a lifestyle with quality, dignity and respect toward the environment. This way, it evaluates the history, making a chronological analysis of the processes of development through a critical reflection on the idea of progress and its implications. It relates it to the emergence of the modern State as the center of the powers decisions in modernity. Then, it examines, in Brazil, the development model and its implications to the contemporary way of life in this moment of globalization. It culminates with the approach of sustainability as a condition for development; it mentions models of development in Western societies, pointing to the discussions about concepts of sustainability that have been formulated and discussed recently. After reviewing the literature, it addresses the methodology based on co-participation and on the accomplishment of diagnostic evaluation and planning as tools for achieving sustainable actions by the application of questionnaires, interviews and meetings with residents of the village, in order to construct knowledge collectively. In final words, facing questions and doubts set around the model of economic development, the work emphasizes the enhancement of local knowledge as a premise for performing diagnostic evaluations and planning of actions that serve as a subsidy for taking decisions on behalf of Sustainable Development. Finally, propositions and challenges are presented, based on local reality, signaling possible avenues to be followed to achieve the goal here proposed.
