RESUMO

The objective of this work was to contribute to the development of the health situation analysis, which will he able to apprehend differentials related to inequalities of living conditions present in the distinct population groups coexisting in the urban space. Reviewing the main theorization related to the social inequalities and the relationship between these inequalities and the Epidemiology, it was emphasied the need of adopting methodoloogies that permit the operacionalization of variables which reflect these inequalities. At the same time, these methodologies must be accessible to be utilized by the health system, enlarging its ability to identify main population groups, in order to plan health actions. ft was assumed the premise of the social determination existing on the urban space occupation. A set of habitation pattern and urban infra-structure characteristics was adopted as a proxy of living conditions. A populational stratification was built based on grouping of regional areas of the city of Olinda-PE. homogeneous for thc:se characteristics. Utilizing health indicators of common use in Epidemiology, it was made a diagnosis of the health situation of these groupings where was detected significant differentials among them, corresponding to ascendent levels of health situation to those with better living conditions. This result indicates the existence of health iniquities in the city under study. Furthermore, it suggests the possibility of the utilization of the listed variables in the urban environment as adequate to build a stratification system which allow to apprehend those differences on the risk of illnessand death relüted to the social inequality
