RESUMO

The way in which the family members face the visual deficiency may influence on their adaptation to the child’s diagnosis of low vision. Thus, the objective of this paper was to study the relation between the mothers’ attitude about low vision and their experience before the diagnosis. Therefore, semi-structured interviews were conducted with eleven mothers of low vision children received at the Visual Stimulation of Low Vision Service of State University of Campinas Teaching Hospital. This study was characterized as a qualitative research, having the social performance as a theoretical reference. The content analysis technique was used for data analysis, establishing three thematic categories: diagnosis experience, visual stimulation, low-vision performance – the search for the cure and future expectancy. During the data discussion, the mothers showed concern about the possibility of their children become blind, and it was evident that they did not have a clear comprehension about the meaning of low vision, interpreting the medical diagnosis in a subjective way. In addition, it was found that there is a relation between how the mother faces the low vision/ blindness and how she is able to accept her child’s diagnosis. Most of the mothers reacted negatively and did not accept their children’s visual deficiency, and three mothers reacted positively, even admitting the inherent difficulties related to low vision. It was observed that the mother’s positive attitude contributes for adaptation to her low-vision child’s reality. It is important to emphasize how the diagnosis should be transmitted to families, being necessary that the doctor considers the parents’ cultural, emotional and economical conditions, which may avoid a clear comprehension of the diagnosis and a real expectancy regarding the child’s future.
