RESUMO

In this work the geologic considerations on the granites diggings for ornamental ends are presented, a profile of the Brazilian sector of ornamental rocks and a diagnosis of the productive chain of the State of Pernambuco, involving the mining (main deposits, methods of cultivate, technology of cut for the dismounting of blocks), sawing shops and marble shops. The ornamental rocks sector of Pernambuco has been presenting frank regression. From pioneer in the opening of deposits in relation to the states of the CearÃ, ParaÃba, Rio Grande do Norte and Bahia, the state counts currently on 4 mining sites in continuous operation: two in Bom Jardim (Imperial Brown), Pedra (Yellow Ipanema and Samba Red), and others that operate in a discontinuous way, such as the Sunset Red (Arcoverde), Red Brown (SertÃnia), Salmon Lagoon and Relic (Alagoinha), Ipanema/Olinda Red (Pedra), Imperial Rose (Garanhuns) and Red Ventura (Venturosa). Beside the favorable geologic context the extraction of ornamental rocks, Pernambuco displays a series of advantages in comparison with other regions of the country, amongst them: flat or inexistent ground covering, what reduces the exploitation costs; inexistence of serious ecological problems, considering that the deposits are placed in small population areas, due to inclemency of the half-barren climate; abundance of easily adaptable handiwork and to the exploitation services. Added to this, the diggings are placed in places of easy access, cut for passable roads during all year; greater proximity to European, Asian and North American markets, what makes the freight cheaper in relation to the south of the country. Approximately 70% of Pernambuco state territory is formed by rocks of the Pre-Cambrian crystalline basement, which associated to the litho-structural characteristics of its geologic outline without doubts reserves an extraordinary potentiality in ornamental granites, considered excellent of the aesthetic-decorative point of view. The main deposits, are located in the region of the Rural and Rainforest zone, existing cultivating in some places, as much for ornamental rocks as for rocks of quarries and âbritaâ, amongst which one detaches the reserve of the located Imperial Brown granite in the city of Bom Jardim, with broad acceptance in the national and international markets. It is pointed out that the majority of the deposits are located next to the main tarred roads, what allows an easy access to the consuming centers, mainly the city of Recife, which is far from the deposits in a radius 400 km
