RESUMO

One of the main points of concern in industries is the seeking for reducing costs and increasing productivity. Technological progress brings, as a consequence, more complex systems and the necessity of efficient maintenance able to keep them in operation. In this context, the maintenance is playing an increasing role, becoming a source of competitive advantage for industries. We must exploit the potential of the maintenance function, and therefore it is necessary to know the practices and deficiencies in management systems today. With this proposal, we sought to portray the maintenance management in the industries of manufacturing and service companies from the Metropolitan Region of Recife (RMR). This work presents the results of a field survey that aims to diagnose the maintenance management in RMR. The survey data on the maintenance was undertaken by means of the development and application of a questionnaire. Then, an investigation in the data collected was performed, through descriptive and exploratory analysis, to explain the characteristics of the samples and identify associations between the variables surveyed. In general, one can say that there is little use of available techniques for performing the maintenance. The management methodologies and tools are little used, which shows a need for greater investment in order to boost the maintenance industries
