RESUMO

The JaboatÃo hydrographic basin, located in the southern portion of Pernambuco State, encompass VitÃria de Santo AntÃo, Moreno, Jaboatao dos Guararapes, Cabo de Santo Agostinho, Recife e SÃo LourenÃo da Mata counties. Its drainage area cuts intensely occupied urban areas where several economic activities are developed. The inadequate land use and occupation allied to a deficient infrastructure cause several environmental problems, such as: surface water and air pollution, erosive process, solid waste inadequate deposition, etc. The main objective of this dissertation was to do an environmental evaluation of physical resources of the JaboatÃo river basin and from this evaluation present a Geographical Information System (GIS). The application of this GIS permitted the integration of several types of information allowing the generation of new information and its cartographic visualization. The research encompassed, in a general way, five steps: review of the available bibliographic and cartographic material, fields work, maps elaboration, development of an application based on a Geographical Information System, final interpretation and writing of this dissertation. To accomplish this, it was used the following equipments: GPS (Global Positioning System), digitalization table, plotter, scanners, several softwares and digital cameras. As a result it was observed that the environmental condition in the JaboatÃo river basin is highly vulnerable and this condition is reflected in the Water Quality Index (WQI) which varies from acceptable (41), to very bad (9) along its main course. To revert this situation itâs necessary to adapt severe and effective measures to promote its recuperation.
