RESUMO

The work described herein focuses on the development of an optical system, based on heterodyne Mach-Zenhder interferometry, for detecting ultra-sound (and mechanical microvibrations) in devices and opaque solid materials. Detection of ultra-sound in those devices and materials reveals a variety of important and practical information, such as Elasticity Moduli, location of inner defects, accurate thickness of layers, resonance frequencies of structures and so on. All these information can be readily used for nondestructive evaluation purposes or even as control signals for industrial monitoring processes. Full advantage of this detection optical system is obtained when it is used together with a remote and broad-band ultra-sound generation system, for instance a pulsed laser exhibiting a controllable output energy. The simultaneous optical generation and detection of ultra-sound in solids is called laser-ultra-sound technique. In this contribution, however, the development of the laser-ultra-sound generation system is not attempted. In fact, it will be developed in future work. Finally, the optical detection system here developed is coupled to a PC for ultra-sound signals acquisition, storing, processing and displaying. To accomplish this task, a high performance AD/DA acquisition board is programmed using the LabVIEW software.
