RESUMO

This investigation goal is to identify and analyze the causes of success and failure of small firms, headquartered in the city of Floriano, state of PiauÃ. In Brazil, social and economic relevance of small firms is confirmed by the statistical indices: the great percentage of employed workers occupies and registered companies. The indices also disclose that the majority of the new enterprises fail to complete two years of existence. From a survey conducted in Floriano, econometric models (Linear probability, LOGIT and PROBIT) were employed to analyze the data. In this way, the research identified that access to credit is the main determinant small firmsâ success.
