RESUMO

Internal stress can arise in materials due to its fabrication processes as well to its surface preparation, like nitriding or deposition, and to thermal treatment. It can occur in macroscopic scale, called macrostress or in a microscopic degree denominated microstress. The purpose of the present work is the evaluation of X-ray diffiaction technique as a tool in the analyzes of stress in coatings. Two measurement methods were considered: the uniaxial and the biaxial. The first method is easier than the biaxial, but it is proper for single crystal materiais. The second method can be used for any polycrystalline material, but it needs a special device to turn the sample by an angle psi. The analyzed show that the coatings stress depends on the electrodeposion method, the substrate stress and on the mechanical deformation
