RESUMO

Determination of metallic impurities in niobium and tantalum by flame atomic absorption spectrophotometry (or atomic emission), without matrix separation is not possible due to interferences. This work describes the procedure to effect this separation: niobium or tantalum was extracted in 1,2- dichloroethane by means of their complexes with diantipyrylmethanein the presence of hydrofluoric acid. This allowed the separation be achieved directly in the solution obtained from sample dissolution. Hydrofluoric acid concentrations for which niobium or tantalum was quantitatively extracted in organic layer and impurities were retained in aqueous phase, were determined by means of extraction curves. The method was not efficient for aluminum, tungsten and zircon, but it was successfull for separation of Co, Cu, Mn, Mo, Na, Sn and Ti from the matrix. Determinations of Co, Cu, Mn, Mo, Sn and Ti were made by atomic absorption while Na was determined by atomic emission. To find optimum conditions, effects of hydrofluoric acid, tungsten, zircon and of the concomitants were studied for each element to be analyzed. By this way, maximum concentration of each concomitant allowed for the determination of each element was established. Due to lack of certified standards, samples were analyzed with and without standard additions. The results showed that the rnethod is suitable to analyse metallic impurities in pure metaIs, oxides and aluminothermic reduction products. It can be applied to analysis of alloys too.
