RESUMO

The electrical transformers contains Polychlorinated Biphenyls (PCBs), at the end of their lifespan and or by legal imposing, must have theirs disposal in environmentally appropriate conditions. This thesis will be based upon the authors previous research and study, which resulted in an industrial unit named TECORI, located in Pindamonhangaba, SP. It has been successfully operating since 2001and focusing entirely upon the decontamination and recycling of PCBs contaminated transformers. The unit is fully licensed by respective governmental organs responsible for the environmental preservation. This work has been divided into the following three stages: First Stage: It shows the evident advantages for the environment, economy and occupational health when using decontamination technology with the subsequent recycling of metals, compared with the traditional technology of incineration at high temperatures followed by the disposal of metal slag in controlled landfills. Second Stage: Research has been conducted to identify the best available technology for decontamination of electrical transformers contaminated with PCBs. Third Stage: Studies of process engineering have been carried out with a view to proposing technological improvement in decontamination and also to introducing it in a unit for disposal of contaminated transformers within the system of Stage of the Art in environment terns, economy and occupational health. This thesis has the aim at making available the technical know-how acquired from previous work and studies that led to set up TECORI. Moreover, the acquisition of such Know-how can be very useful for developing technologies related to environmental preservation, as well as contributing to a data base oriented towards technological improvements for decontaminations of electrical transformers contaminated by PCBs
