RESUMO

Economically viable and ambiently safe alternatives for the treatment of the medical wastes are a challenge for the health managers, mainly in the countries in development. The heat is used in some processes of treatment of residues, the use of the not ionizing radiation of the microwaves type in the disinfection of the infectious residues is a reality. The medical wastes of the city of Ribeirão Preto /SP, previously sterilized in autoclave, was inoculated with known number of microorganisms of the species Escherichia coli, Pseudomonas aeruginosa and Staphylococcus aureus in the vegetative form for the process of dielectric heating provoked by microwaves in laboratory scale, reproducing the real scale. It was analyzed the influence of the exposition time to the radiation (E. coli, 15, 25, 30, 35 and 40 min., ,P. aeruginosa and S. aureus, 25, 30, 35 and 40 min.), and also the influence of the power per unit of residue mass (60W/kg, 80W/kg and 100W/kg) in the percentage of inativation of the microorganisms for the entrance humidity of the residue of 50% in mass. The inativation fraction was sufficiently dependent on the investigated variable. For E. coli, 100% of the microorganisms were inactivated in power 100W/kg and 40 minutes of exposition, for P aeruginosa. 99% and S. aureus 88%, in the same studied conditions. The experimental results were adjusted based on the law of Chick (kinetic first-class). The activation energies diminished with the increase of the power, except for P. aeruginosa that practically supplied constant values. The gotten values allowed verifying that the E. coli showed greater sensitivity to the treatment process, whereas the S. aureus was the most resistant for the studied conditions. The technique of inativation of medical wastes can be effective, once the operational conditions are properly established. The parameters power for unit of residue mass and time of processing showed themselves essential in this definition.
