RESUMO

Ultraviolet radiation has been accepted as an altemative to chlorination for disinfection of water. The main subjects in this work can be summarized as follows: microorganism inactivation survey; comparative economical analysis between uv system and chlorine disinfection;comparative electrical energy consumption between them. A batch reactor, equipped with uv lamp, was used in the tests. E. coli, P.aeruginosa, A.hydrophila, E.faecalis, V.cholera, were the microorganisms employed for the study of inactivation. The economical analysis was accomplished based on capital costs, operation and maintenance of uv and chlorine system based on current market prices of components. The energetic analysis comparison was based on the volume ratio between disinfected water and electrical energy consumption of both the systems. The E.coli was the bacteria with the strongest initial resistance but the greatest inactivation constant. E.faecalis was the most resistant. The uv system provide disinfected water by R$ 0,037 per person per year. For low chlorine doses the electrical energy consumption between the two systems are equivalent. Finally, the work shows that uv radiation used for water disinfection is an important tool as an efficient bactericidal and that it competes economically with chlorination
