RESUMO

In Brazil the designer formation had beginning at the 1960 decade, and having as reference the formation concepts and also the resume of the school of Ulm (Germany, 1955), whose the objective was create a technical and formalist professional. In the academic perspective, and acquire technical skills, should also be able to reflect on the place of design in society by means of general subjects. Since then, this proposal of formation passed per several changes that having assumed in the last decade and more evident with the publications of the national curricular lines of direction (2004), more professionalizing and marketing character and multiple specialties had being created (more than 460 in 2009). In case of the product designer formation, which develop products to the market, the clear difficulty to define the professional profile demanded by the productive sector, has led to the technical formation, instead of generalist, since the profile looked per the industries shows in direction of professionals with more flexibility and with stronger capacity of adaptation. The objective of this study, carried through in the scope of the group Education, State, and Society EDUPESQUISA/FURB is to understand how teachers who work in the formation of the product Designer in three institutions in the south of the country, with different legal nature but all consolidated in the area realize the proposal of professional training in relation to the market. The research is justified by the need to know how those responsible for training are positioned on the characteristics of egress and the demands of professional practice, subsidizing proposed revision of the resumes and training. The research has qualitative character, but is also supported by quantitative data. The empirical base is to the curriculum of the courses reviewed, questionnaires applied to teachers who teach the course Product Design and semi-structured interviews with coordinators of the course. As a theoretical framework for the analysis of data using the concepts of general and technical training of Kawamura (1990) and Schwartzman (1986). The results show, the three institutions surveyed, the teachers of product design do not have a clear conception of what should be the training and, despite the interviews show a general trend, the curriculum has been building an ever more technical training . This training, however, seems to take much market for higher education institutions of the professional demands of the market
