RESUMO

Technical poultry production is presently requiring more environmental control on the thermal cornfort characteristics because of the use of high potential genetic birds, diets energy high levei, and an increase of birds density. The general objective of this research was to develop a system for roof cooling based on the evaporative cooling concept, using intermittent dripping and a water absorbent tile, for poultry production houses. The evaluation of environrnental aspects was based on the warm and dry season climatic conditions, using small and distorted scale models simulating the poultry houses. The thermal evaluation was proceeded using the black globe temperature (Tg), the black globe and humidity index (BGHI), and thermal radiation load (TRL). The zootechnical response was based on the weight gain measurements using the software Pro-Frango, for the environrnental conditions results. For the insufficient natural ventilation system as well as for the well naturally ventilated one the Tg, BGHI and TRL showed higWy statistical significant differences, when comparing the treatments of using the system with the system of roof cooling, and the one that does not uses the cooling system. When comparing both treatments that used cooling roof it can be found that the differences are not as higWy significant, even though it can be found statistical significantfor some hours ofthe day. As a general behavior it can be said that, during the mornings the treatment of cooling roof using intermittent dripping and a water absorbent tile showed Tg, BGHI and TRL values that indicates better thermal cornfort conditions. This behavior repeats again during the late afternoon. During midday it happened an inversion on the thermal behavior showing that the treatment using dripping and without tile absorbent covering got the best results. Regarding the economical aspect it can be suggested the use of dripping on fiber cement roof for offering the following benefit: a) the increase on weight gain during the last week of production (42-49 days) varied ITom 58g/day.bird to a house poorly ventilated, to 28g/day.birdfor a well ventilated house; b) for poorly ventilated houses it was verified that the system has economical profit after 4 flocks, while for better naturally ventilated conditions the systems presents economicalprofit after 8 flocks
