RESUMO

This research focused on the study and analysis of the conditions of environmental health in rural communities using the Index of Environmental Health (in Portuguese, ISA Índice de Salubridade Ambiental). In order to accomplish this goal, we applied a model known as ISA, developed by Dias (2003), in three countryside areas in the city of Ouro Branco (MG), Brazil, the countryside are: Olaria, Cristais and Castiliano. From the results attained with this application, the inviability of this model has been checked, due to the very low scores found, which do not depict the actual situation in these communities. To address these difficulties and to quantify accurately the environmental health in rural areas, a new mathematical model of ISA facing rural communities has been developed, using Delphi methodology, called ISA / CR. This new equation for calculating the ISA changed the weight of some parameters and incorporated indicators and sub-indicators other than those studied in the urban area. With the same intention and in the subsequent step, this model was applied in the same communities and, from then, it had its effectiveness compared to the model developed by Dias (2003). Effectiveness was proved, because scores significantly higher than those found in ISA Dias (2003) model were found, describing, thus, accurately, the health conditions of such rural communities. In addition to that, an analysis of the environmental health of the communities involved was carried out. At the end of the study, results indicated that the ISA / CR is a useful tool to quantify and compare the environmental health conditions in rural communities and can serve as a baseline for discussion and solution of problems concerning environmental sanitation in rural areas, an aspect of knowledge that is lacking in research and investigations.
