RESUMO

The measurement of Cardiac Output is of great 1mportance for the functional evaluation of the clrculatory system. Together w1th other physiological parameters, such as pressure, heart rate, etc, it allows us to establish the circulatory system hemodynam1c working state. As a consequence, it helps on the adequate d1agnosis of the pathologies that affect the circulatory system. The "Thermodilution method" is used to measure Cardiat Output. This method is widely used in Medical practice, especially in Intensive Care Units. It is used because is simple and quick, allows frequent measurements to be made, has no side effects to the patient and presents good reprodutibility and accuracy. An instrument to measure Cardiac Output was developed, mounted and tested. With this instrument it is possible to obtain the patient s blood temperature and the Thermodilution curve. The instrument, was tested under two different conditions: measurements of Cardiac Output with a mechanical pump and "in vivo" in dogs. The results obtained by the instrument were recorded. They were then compared to the measurements obtained under similar conditions by the IL 701, which is manufactured by Instrumentation. Laboratory Inc. . Using the two instruments, correlation factors of 0.97 for the tests with the mechanical pump and 0.96 for the tests ?in vivo? were obtained. The lnstrument clrcuits that come in contact wlth the patient, are powered by batteries and the highest current which pass through the probe (thermistor) is less than 10 microamperes, to assure maximum protection for the patient
