RESUMO

This work presents a study about several materiais suitable for the construction of tubular structures whose axial deformation could allow the gradual absorption of the enerw generated during a collision. Following the results of this study, a truck underride guard based on such tubular structure was designed and manufactured. In order to take full advantage of the car s active and passive safety devices in collisions against the rear end of a truck, it is necessary that both car ftont bumpeF and truck: rear guard absorb part of the impact energy, and that the truck guard presents enough strength to prevent the "guillotine" effect The underride guard with the structure of gradual deformation was mounted in a truck and resisted to impact of a vehic1e weighing 1,490 kg. The nominal impact speed was 64 km/h. The impact occurred at 50% ofIset on the car driver s side. The use of "fuses" reduced the efIect of the deceleration on the car occupants, proving the viability of the project
