RESUMO

M An analysis of leisure boating and related nautical activities in the state of Bahia reveals a large gap between current operating capacity and the potential for growth. This study discusses the main factors which influence the development of the nautical sector and assesses what changes have taken place since the founding of the Centro Nautico da Bahia (CENAB). This non- governmental institution, established in 1996, promotes the development of boating activity in the state and is concerned with three basic functions: (1) the planning and support of sailing events and tourism, (2) the creation of educational programs for the training and qualification of the citzen, and (3) the overallgrowth of business and services. This study search the effectiveness of the institution to fulfil its objectives. The research for this study is based on field observations as well as derect and indirect data. There is also a theoretical consideration of the economic and social aspects of leisure boating. The author concludes that although CENAB makes a substantial contribution to the nautical sector in Bahia, but much remains to be done to approach the regions potential to its capacity.
