RESUMO

The present work studies the behavior of Newtonian fluid drops of density less than one, rising in purified water in laminar regime, Internal Reynolds number varies from 1 to 1200 and equivalent diameter of drops from 2 to 10mm. The smaller ones are spherics and the larger ones oblated spheroids on their superior part. Pulsation of great drops hás been observed before their reaching a Constant velocity of vertical translation. Graphs showing variations of vertical translation velocity VS. Equivalent diameter and drag coefficient vs. Rei and Reo are given. Empirical formulae have also been found for this curves. Comparison with bubbles rising and drops falling in liquids is also shown. After having reached Constant translation velocity, the trajectory of the drops follows a path closely approximated by an elliptic hyperbolic helix, tending to vertical rectilinear rise. The path of a drop rising with Constant velocity was found to be a function of the initial conditions, whereas the necessary distance to reach vertical translation was found to depend only on the system. In order to Record exactly the trajectory of the drops, twho photografic câmeras placed in perpendicular vertical planes, containing the axis of the trajectory, were used. The particular case of drops rising in water and the photograpic method used, are both new to the Best of the author¿s knowledge.
