RESUMO

This work describes pronouns in the Kaingang language and their position in phrasal structure. We verified through analysis, when personal pronouns in the SN subject are used, there occur some variations in the phrasal structure of the language. With further study and development, we verified the entire pronominal system and sought to elaborate a brief description of the existing pronouns in Kaingang. The first step of the work describes pronouns in simple sentences and, in the second part, pronouns in a text. In our fact finding, we used questionnaires from simple sentences in Portuguese with the purpose of analyzing structure. Our subjects were bilingual teachers from a school located in an indigenous area of Apucaraninha. In Kaingang, the canonic structure in simple sentences is S O V. With the use of pronouns, there is a variation of this phrasal structure. However, at times, there is no change. In the majority of examples with pronominal subjects we have the O V S structure. Possessive pronouns are used in the S O V or O V S structures depending on the subject, whether it is nominal ou pronominal. With demonstrative pronouns as well as indefinite {ũn}, interrogative {ne- he- ũ}, reflexive {venh}, and reciprocal {jagne} ones, there occur various different phrasal structures: S O V, O S V, S V, V S O. In subordinate clauses with relative adjectives, the relative pronoun {ũn} begins the phrase or the demonstrative pronoun, en, functioning as a relative pronoun.
