RESUMO

This article is a survey in public education in the Mossoró-RN, covering the elementary school in order to analyze the dynamics of the teaching staff of schools in the development of environmental education. The analysis of the educational process included three dimensions: the political-pedagogical project, the curriculum and pedagogical practice. To that end, we characterized the political-pedagogical project if and how the curriculum comes to environmental issues; identify the characteristics of the practice and perceptions of educators on notions constituents of environmental education. The definition of environmental education was grounded from a brief history of its emergence, through the events that mark the building up to the debates on their senses of identity, for example, environmental education and conservative critics. The draft methodology was designed in the light of the theoretical contributions of critical environmental education, ecology, politics and complexity theory. The results of the analysis indicate that as the educational process goes, from the project, political and pedagogical practice through the curriculum, the inclusion of the principles of critical environmental education are decreasing percentage, weakening its transformative potential and emancipatory. The interpretation of the data leads us to understand that schools are trying to transform, but the process is long, difficult, full of constraints and limitations that they cant fully control, in other words, have a partial transformation, although other working hypotheses raised cant be totally disregarded. The challenges to integration of the principles of environmental education in the critical dimensions of the educational process, both in discourse and in practice, revolve around the need to discuss / reflect / politicize fundamental concepts such as education, interdisciplinarity, social participation, democracy, autonomy, society and nature. These challenges are some of the barriers to building balanced relations between society and nature.
