During the interview, students filled out a Learning Strategies Questionnaire and a Children’s Depression Inventory. Results indicated the presence of depressive symptoms in children and its negative interference in the use of learning strategies, and in the school performance, mainly in mathematics. Data called attention to the importance that teachers and family be able to recognize and early identify depressive symptons which, in turn, would facilitate the appropriate treatment. This study also pointed out the need of creating new intervention programs target at the development not only of cognitive strategies, but also of affective strategies.
