RESUMO

Objectives: To evaluate the prevalence of depression, anxiety and quality of life in women referred to outpatient care at tertiary mastology, which are followed through the diagnosis and treatment of breast cancer. Methods: observational cross-sectional, descriptive, analytical, prospective study in 25 women treated for breast cancer at the mastology clinic Hospital Geral de Palmas (HGP), Tocantins, in the period from September to December 2009. For this research, the following instruments were applied: the hospital anxiety and depression scale (HADS); the questionnaire of quality of life (WHOQOL-bref) and a form filled by the examiner with questions about the socio-cultural conditions, emphasizing the history of stressful life events such as loss of close relatives, separation or divorce or some sort of grief or loss that could influence the emotional aspect of the patients before diagnosis. Results: Analyzing the results presented, it appeared that 13 patients recognized stressful life events before the diagnosis of breast cancer. These events were related to the loss of a close relative in 11 patients. The analysis of the scale, Hospital Anxiety and Depression, showed that 7 patients had anxiety, and 4 patients had depression, 28% and 16% respectively. The quality of life was classified as intermediate for most patients, highlighting the social relationships and environment, with scores of 15.40 and 15.20, respectively. Conclusions: The results suggest that stressful life events can influence the onset of breast cancer, and psychological phenomena of depression and anxiety require a better assessment in terms of instruments for data collection in studies in the future.
