RESUMO

Polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs), constitute a class of hazardous organic chemicals consisting of three or more fused benzene rings. PAHs mostley occur as a result of fossil fuel combustion, as by-products of industrial processing, and during the cooking of foods. PAHs enter the environment from a multiplicity of sources which include: accidental discharges during the transport; use and disposal of petroleum products; surface water run-off from forest and prairie fire sites. PAHs are hydrophobic compounds and their persistence within ecosystems is due chiefly to their low water solubility. The rapidly become associated with sediments, where they may become buried and persistent until degraded, bioaccumulated or removed by dreading. The lipophilicity, genotoxicity and environmental persistence increase as the molecular size of PAHs. The possible fates of PAHs in the environment include volatilization, photooxidation, chemical oxidation, bioaccumation, adsorption to soil particles and microbial degradation...Note: The complete abstract is available with the full electronic digital thesis or dissertations
