RESUMO

This study aims at showing the historical development of the Programa Prociência from UERJ, since its beginning, in 1996, until its selective process, in 2003. Besides analyzing its results, the study intends to bring back its background and realize the impact of this program on the conception of the University function, specially concerning research. This was the result of documental analysis, interviews and questionaries, wich proved to be effective regarding the Professors participation in the Program. It also showed that, after nine years, the professors still stick to the evaluation process. However the program shows that competitive atmosphere is installed among the professors, which has some negative effects.
