RESUMO

In this dissertation, the decoding of block coded modulation schemes is considered. Multidimensional signal constellations are studied instead of traditional schemes that use two-dimensional signal constellations. This investigation is restricted to the use of PSK based schemes, because this kind of schemes are more appropriate for certain communication channels, e.g. the satellite channel. The block coded modulation schemes investigated are defined by the transmitter s code and by the decoder/demodulator of the receiver. The transmitter s code is the result of different error-protection codes applied to the information bits. The decoder/demodulator recovers the information of the affected signal received. Our main focus was on the use of multistage decoders for the different codes constructed. In order to compare the schemes constructed with other schemes that already exist, two usual parameters are used: the block error probability for different signal-to-noise-ratio values and the decoding complexity
