RESUMO

The article discusses the public debates surrounding the enactment of the so called "death with dignity" law in Argentina, which guarantees the right of patients with terminal or incurable diseases to withhold or withdraw medical treatments and interventions at the end of life. The article analyses the role of the catholic activists in these debates, describing the actors who represent the voice of the Catholic Church in the public sphere, the nature of their arguments and the strategies displayed to shape legislation. First, based on historical documents of the Catholic Church the institutional stances regarding end-of-life care dilemmas are reconstructed. Second, the strategy of the Argentinean Catholic Church (and their spokespersons) in recent public debates in Argentina is discussed.
