RESUMO
This research presents the context and reception of the work of Saint Augustine, emphasizing themes related to the theology of the imago Dei. The research begins with the presupposition that discussions regarding context as well as theses of feminist authors contribute to a better understanding of the work of the author, whose influence is readily perceived in the vision of human sexuality and the social/ecclesial roles of men and women. This context reveals a socio-political and cultural transfusion that has in religion one of its principle elements. This context of debate and appropriation of concepts decisively influenced, and at times determined, the production of the author. In this infusion of influences, it is possible to perceive the deceptive arguments of Augustine with regard to establishing roles for men and women and their place in creation as well as their relation with the imago Dei. The authors studied demonstrate the complexity involved in his literary production, and the intense debate regarding the roles of men and women in creation. The formulation of the thought of Augustine and the development of his work have decisively influenced western Christian thought, and, as such, their implications and consequences need to be read and interpreted critically by theology.(AU)
