RESUMO

PANAIA, C. C. Children with school learning difficulties: risks factors for refuses and dropouts of psychopedagogy treatment. 2007. 94 f. Dissertação (Mestrado) Faculdade de Medicina de Ribeirão Preto, Universidade de São Paulo, 2007. Researches have shown that mental health public services are sought for the attendance to children with poor school performance; at the same time there are elevated rates of dropout by the families at these services. Different factors are associated to interruption at different moments of treatment. Refusers families (that terminate before treatment begins) are different that dropout families (that terminate during the treatment). This work intended to verify the differences between the families that follow all the treatment and those families who terminate in any time after the first contact. It was a retrospective study which utilized data of 258 childrens, aged six to 11 years, whose registrations were obtained at the first consult at the Psychological Childrens Service of the HCFMRP-USP. Were utilized the socio-demographic data and the follow instruments data: Raven, Rutters Behavior Child Scale A2, Home Environments Resources Scale and the recents Adverses Events Scale. For the analysis, were defined two comparative groups: a) refusers group (n= 41) in comparison with non-refusers group (n = 217); b) at the non-refusers group, were analyzed differences between dropouts group (n = 107) and completers group (n = 110). Analysis was performed considering three variables sets: a) socio-demographic variables; b) clinical child variables; c) environment variables. It was found that school age, behavior problems, cognitive capacity and programmed activities media are lower in the refusers group than in non-refusers one (p 0,05). Refusers group also shows lower score of recent adverses events at childs life with regard to adverse experiences in the family. The dropout group, compared to the completer group, shows lower school age and lower ages media of children and parents and father´s scholarity, more cognitive impairment and more scores about adverses events and recent parental adversities. Data shows that refuser group has more children at initial school age stage in wich difficulties are not evident yet and little behavior problems. That can make family to believe that childrens difficulties demand especial treatment. The dropout group have more children at initial school age and the lower media relative to age of children and parents and father´s scholarity; this results are corroborated by literature. Cognitive impairment could have led family to have no fullfil expectation about the effectiveness of treatment. Also, living adverse situations makes more difficult to the engagement of the families, establishing dropout risk. Its important to identify refuses families and dropouts families in order to find effective measures for the retention of more children in the ambulatory treatment. Key- words: mental health; child treatment, refuser, dropout
