RESUMO

In the period of 1970 to 2000, Brazil experienced an urban population and per capita family income growth of about 164,8% and 163,6%, respectively. The objective of the present work is to investigate in which way the urban economic growth of medium and large cities in Brazil, measured by the urban population and per capita family income growth, is related to the characteristics that these cities presented in 1970, by the following subjects: initial conditions (demographic dimension, income level and regionalization), infrastructure, education, public finances, labor market, income inequality and urban characteristics. The metodology used in the work was based on a sample of 91 cities, which had the total population above 100.000 inhabitants in 1970, as well as it contemplated the analysis of classification (cluster and discriminant) and multiple regressions. The main results founded show that: 1) the results were different between the urban population and per capita family income growth; 2) the urban population growth was bigger in the cities with higher degree of industrialization and level of education and lesser percentage of household with sanitary installation; 3) there was a larger growth of the per capita familiar income in the cities where the percentage of households with sanitary installation and the level of income inequality were bigger, but the initial per capita income was smaller.
